Sploshed in translation

The Babel fish is small, yellow and leech-like, and probably the oddest thing in the Universe. It feeds on brainwave energy received not from its own carrier but from those around it, It absorbs all unconscious mental frequencies from this brainwave energy to nourish itself with. the practical upshot of this is that if you stick a Babel fish in your ear you can instantly understand anything said to you in any language.

Douglas Adams,
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

With the messy content of British and American TV being in terminal decline, being able to search for clips in other languages is becoming more and more essential. It is not always as straightforward as just translating words, because many languages do not have a word for “gunge” or “slime”, and the translation of “messy” is not used in the context we are interested in. However, there are certain words and phrases which frequently yield results, and they are listed below.

Thanks to those who have already contributed to the list below. Please add any more you know of. It would be great to hear from native speakers; feel free to correct my shoddy translations.
