Music Monday: Charlotte Hatherley/Ash

Ash started as a three-piece band but later recruited a second guitarist – a woman called Charlotte Hatherley, who left in 2006. Since then she had a solo career of her own. One of her solo songs (this one from 2009) was called called “White” and if you play it backwards, you basically get Lisa Hannigan’s “Knots”. Maybe Little Birdy’s “Beautiful To Me” without the men since she plays guitar rather than ukulele. Point is, it’s a reverse painting.

Two years prior to that she put out an album called The Deep Blue. This was the cover…

When she was in the band, there was some wetness too. “Shining Light” doesn’t feature Charlotte but does feature frontman Tim Wheeler (bear with me…) and (from 2:26) another woman underwater. Visually it’s pretty striking.

There’s also the video for “Clones” which, while it doesn’t have any WAM in the actual video, does have this little bit of behind-the-scenes info from bassist Mark Hamilton.

This is a straight up performace video. Dark and gritty it was shot in a warehouse in Camden, London. It was a cold winter morning, there was no heating and we got drenched by a guy with a hose between takes. Thanks [Jeff Thomas, director]!
